Grocery Haul

Well, this week was shopping week and I spent every single penny of my grocery budget.  I don’t generally do that.  I usually have a bit left over for the in-between week for extra milk or bread or any really good sales.  However, this week WAS a really good sale. On meat!

I waltzed into my local Albertsons, made a beeline to the back to the meat counter and shocked the lady behind the counter by asking for 20 pounds of chicken breasts.  That’s right 20 pounds!

After that, I headed over to the meat case and grabbed 17 pounds of roast.  I cleaned them out of the sale roasts and still didn’t hit my target.  I wanted 20 pounds.  Don’t worry, they had more in the meat case and I’m sure they had even more than that in the back so it wasn’t totally Extreme Meat Shopping!

So, what on earth am I doing to do with 37 pounds of meat all at once?  Why can it of course! I will pull out a few of the chicken breasts to cook “regularly”, but everything else is getting canned up.

I’m really feeling a push to get stocked up and the prices were way too good to pass up.  In another couple of weeks I’ll be getting another 40 pounds of grass-fed, no antibiotic, no hormone, no pink-slime ground meat again too. For just slightly more than what I pay for the regular stuff.  Woohoo!

Aaaaand! I have a supply of beef bones just waiting to be made into beef broth and canned.  Aaaaand! I have two chicken carcasses to make into broth. And you thought canning season was over. Not!

Hope you’re having a great weekend!

Ever since I started putting back food, I have felt really pushed. As the U.S. seems to be slipping on a never-ending slope, I have felt the urgency grow stronger.

I do love my freezer, which allows me to buy meat on sale and stock up. I just cooked up a giant package of hamburger and froze it for quick and easy meals. It’s a good feeling 🙂
