Selfish?

A friend called me selfish yesterday.  In a roundabout way.  See, I’m in  a Union which means I get a fairly decent livable wage and I have really good benefits and things.  So, now that our contract is expiring we may be going on strike.  We’ll be going on strike against the company that made 14 billion – yes billion – dollars in profit, voted  a dividend increase for it’s shareholders  and now wants to take away just about EVERYTHING the Union has worked so hard over the years to get.  And the company is blaming “the economy”.  The “economy” which will turn around far sooner then a bad contract will expire.  And yet, I’m selfish.

Why is it selfish to tell far wealthier people than me that “NO!” you will not screw over the people who actually do the work that makes you your millions in salary and perks.  Why is it selfish to tell those same people “YES!” you will continue to pay the people who actually do the work a decent salary and NOT ship our jobs overseas so that the people in THIS country will actually have the money to buy your product.  Why is that selfish?

Why is it selfish to not want to have to file bankruptcy if I or my husband gets very ill or hurt?  Just because the “econony” is difficult right now the company wants to take away my access to healthcare that right now is completely affordable?  Why is it selfish to not want to watch the Powers That Be just get richer on the backs of the people who actually do the work that generates the money?  Why is that selfish?

If that is selfish, then the rest of the world needs to GET SELFISH!!!!!!!

People don’t get people protected by unions. I have been both and on both sides of both. It is good to have backing during times like these.
